Campus Law Enforcement Visits: What Faculty Should Know

Federal and State Law Enforcement on UT Austin Campus

Federal and state law enforcement authorities may occasionally have cause to be on campus. Officers may enter any public area of campus. Access to nonpublic areas may require an officer to provide a judicial warrant though not in every instance.

Should an officer arrive at your worksite – whether you are in a classroom, lab, office, clinic, or another sensitive area – please be courteous and professional. Do not interfere with their operation. Do not attempt to assess whether a warrant is required or whether one presented is sufficient. Instead, if appropriate, you may inform the officer that you will notify the University of Texas at Austin Police Department (UTPD) for their awareness. Please call UTPD at 512-471-4441 to inform them of the situation. It is likely our police department will already be aware of the reason law enforcement is on campus and someone can talk to you about what to do.

Faculty and staff with additional questions should contact their supervisor. Anyone seeking personal legal advice should contact a licensed attorney.
